CARL KISS was arguably born to be a trial lawyer. He has always fought for the things he believes in, and only accepts cases in which he believes. Carl graduated from a Top Ten law school (New York University School of Law) in 1983, and has had no desire to live anywhere but Oregon ever since.
Carl’s legal career could not have started any better. His first work as a young lawyer was for Charles Paulson, one of the finest attorneys Oregon has ever had. The legal knowledge and practical insights Chuck provided to Carl as he mentored him have proved invaluable to Carl’s clients throughout Carl’s 20 plus years of practice, and are reflected in Carl’s own “AV” rating (the highest possible rating) by Martindale-Hubbel. That “AV” rating indicates very high to preeminent legal ability and very high ethical standards, and was determined by the confidential opinions provided by other Oregon lawyers.
In just the last six years, Carl has had the honor of receiving the Oregon Trial Lawyers Association’s Public Justice Award, the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Award, Basic Rights Oregon’s Fair Workplace Award, OGALLA’s Award of Merit, and the Amicus Award of the American Diabetes Association (“in recognition of [his] outstanding commitment to ending discrimination against all people with diabetes”). The Oregon State Bar’s Board of Governors has found Carl to be “highly qualified” to become a judge on the Oregon Supreme Court and the Oregon Court of Appeals. Carl has served as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Civil Rights Section of the Oregon State Bar, and as a member of the Chief Justice’s Civil Law Advisory Committee and the Oregon State Bar’s Procedure & Practice Executive Committee. In years past, Carl served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Oregon Jewish Museum, and as a member and Vice President of the Board of Directors of Elderway, Inc. (a non-profit corporation that does business as Store to Door of Oregon, and provides home grocery and prescription delivery services to the elderly and disabled).
When away from work, Carl enjoys nothing more than spending time with his teenage daughter Molly. Gardening and cooking are serious family interests. When time permits, Carl also loves to explore wilderness areas for chanterelle, morel and porcini mushrooms, and to pursue his interests in wine and American art pottery.
